How can Dom Costa be busier than other candidates?
As a voter in the 21st state House district, I am frustrated that my representative, Dom Costa, refused to participate in the League of Women Voters candidate forum (May 2, “Candidate Forum Nixed After House Incumbent Says He Can’t Make Dates”). This is the first time voters in this district have had a choice of representatives in 10 years, and we deserve to know what each candidate stands for.
Mr. Costa’s campaign seems to be trying to get out of responsibility for declining, giving the Post-Gazette and the League of Women Voters the same unbelievable excuse that he just can’t find a free hour before the election. (Several other incumbent Allegheny County Democrats have participated in LWV forums, including Mr. Costa’s cousin, Paul. I’m sure they are just as busy.)
Rep. Costa likes to say he’s a leader, not a politician, but this is one of the most egregious attempts at political campaign spin I’ve ever seen. No representative is guaranteed re-election. Out of respect for the democratic process, incumbents need to stand on stage next to their challengers to answer questions, explain their records and offer their visions for their next term. Shame on Dom Costa for shirking his responsibility. SHERILYN SAPORITO

With the Republicans controlling all three branches of the federal government, and a majority of the state legislatures and governorships, why would the GOP want to fund education to make the system work properly?
In their view, it is working perfectly! RALPH VITT Green Tree shot. Not for bellicose, tweeting Donald Trump, who behaves like a bully and has been roundly criticized around the world for his desire to ban Muslims from entering the United States, his derogatory remarks against women, his stance regarding DACA and Mexicans, and his praise for the alt-right.
Republicans are promoting Mr. Trump as the only one who deserves credit for the possibility of peace in the Korean Peninsula. Yet China, Russia, Moon Jae-In (South Korea’s president) and Kim Jong Un merit more recognition.
POTUS, in his recent Michigan rally, repeated the falsehood that he alone made it happen, and some people believe his award is a done deal.
“Nobel for the Donald” is propaganda to pump up the president’s image and help him win re-election. ADA KLEIN Squirrel Hill
I am not a hockey fan. After seeing the dirty hit that injured the Penguins’ Zach AstonReese on Tuesday night (May 2, “Wilson’s Hit Breaks Jaw of Rookie Aston-Reese”), it is easy to understand why. What I see is cheating and bad sportsmanship, not only in the playoff games but throughout the season. The league allows this to go on. I see fighting that the officials allow to go on too long.
I truly do not understand how this game can be called a sport. It’s a shame that the children who like to watch and play hockey are learning how to play unfairly and to try to win without regard to their opponents’ well-being. LUELLA MAZER Reserve
