Grand classic Colonial

- By Rosa Colucci

Mary Jo and Thomas Truschel were looking to build a new home in Monroeville when they found the perfect site — with a high elevation and nice sight lines through the neighborhood and into surrounding woods.

“We learned from the neighbors that this area was once a farm,” she said.

In 1991, they purchased the nearly ¾-acre lot and hired builder David Barcellino to construct a five-bedroom, four-bath home at 300 Shalimar Court. Before long, their children were sliding down the banister of the spectacular central staircase. But now their grandchildren are doing the same thing and they’ve decided to downsize.

They have put the home on the market for $509,000 (MLS No. 1317955) through family member Patricia Truschel of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Services (412363-4000 ext. 220 or www.coldwellbankerhomes.com). There is an open house 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The builder constructed the brick Colonial with classic features, including brick steps, a tall portico and a grand center hallway. A double-door entrance and second-floor Juliet balcony add to the elegant feel. The 16-by- 13-foot foyer and the white spindled staircase are lit by a grand chandelier.

Mr. Barcellino surprised the Truschels with the 15-by-13-foot den.

“He added the office with the coffered ceiling and would not let me see it until it was done.” she said.

The oak or cherry ceiling has recessed lighting, dentil molding and matching bookcases.

To the left of the foyer is the 15-by-13-foot formal dining
