This tax solution could alleviate some fear of Amazon

-

Based on a recent PG editorial as well as Ron Kasper’s letter (May 6, “HQ2 and Seniors”), there seems to be a considerable concern that property values and consequently property taxes will skyrocket should Amazon select Pittsburgh as the site of its second headquarters. The fear is that rising values and taxes might put an undue burden on homeowners with fixed incomes, specifically senior citizens.

A simple solution that might alleviate these concerns would be to allow the potentially affected senior citizens to apply for a property tax freeze so that any payments of future tax increase amounts could be postponed until ownership of the property changes hands. At that point, the amount of the tax increases (plus interest) would be paid from the proceeds of the sale of the then-higher-valued property. MATT MATESIC Franklin Park ideals of working people, who support a good education for all and who have worked to bring funding to their districts to support their communities. Why would we let the Democratic Socialists of America discredit their efforts? Why should we let those who have said they wouldn’t be Democrats if they thought they could win as independents tell us who to vote for? Let us be frank: DSA candidates are in our party only because they can’t win without us, so why are we playing their games?

I agree we have a real chance to make a difference. We have a chance in Allegheny County to take out tea partyist Keith Rothfus and a true opportunity to win back a seat once held by progressive Jim Ferlo. But we also have good Democrats who have stood by us for years, who should not be thrown to the wayside by extremists. I will not let this group dictate my vote. I will be sticking by our Democrats who have stood by us. I hope you do, too. LEO BENTON

There have been many NCAA champions and coaches of national prominence. Just to name a few from my generation: Hugh Peery was a multiple NCAA champion and Olympian. His father, coach Rex Peery, coached many NCAA champions, such as his son Ed Peery, Joe Solomon and Ed DeWitt.

I don’t know who was on the selection committee, but they were woefully uninformed, as was athletic director Heather Lyke. R.A. MORABITO Irwin
