Fig & Ash to open on North Side in fall

When chef Cory Hughes won the Sandwich Sampler to kick off the recently wrapped North Side Sandwich Week, it was a harbinger of delicious things to come from his restaurant-inprogress, Fig & Ash at 514 E. Ohio St.

His sandwich was a display of Jamison lamb sausage from the Latrobe farm, roasted banana pepper, tomato gastrique and a basil yogurt that stole the show among strong contenders. They included runner-up North Side newcomer, Brugge on North @ Alphabet City (40 W. North Ave.) — a sibling to Point Brugge Cafe in Point Breeze — with its turkey, spinach, pesto, gouda and pepper jelly on grilled sourdough, and the Italian beef sandwich from Flavors Street Food, slated to open at 3231 Brighton Road in June.

Sandwiches are available at participating locations — with the exception of that lamb sausage number, since Mr. Hughes’ Fig & Ash is not open yet. It is on track to open in the fall as part of the East Ohio Street redevelopment.
