since 1987.

But what does this conglomeration of new guys say about the state of WPIAL baseball?

“I think it just has to do with going to six classifications in baseball,” North Hills coach Randy Miller said. “It has opened up things for more teams to show themselves.”

This is the second year of six classifications in Pennsylvania high school baseball. From 2005-16, there were four classifications, and only three from 19992004. From 1979-98, baseball had only two classifications and only one before 1979.

The previous time North Hills made the final, the Indians’ star pitcher was Thom Dornbrook, who took a 10-0 record into the title game, but lost to Burrell, 6-4. Dornbrook played football at the University of Kentucky and then was an offensive lineman for the Steelers.

“I think there’s a definitely a buzz at school with what’s going on,” Miller said. “I wasn’t real keen at first with the five classifications because we were in the biggest class before and I loved that section with Seneca Valley, Pine-Richland, Butler and Shaler. But you know what, this was a good move for us going to 5A.”

When South Fayette previously played for the title, Ken Morgan was 9 years old, and he thinks he remembers attending the game. Now he’s South Fayette’s coach. Morgan also believes the sixclass system has something to do with new faces in the finals. But Morgan believes there is another reason.

“I think baseball in this area has come a long way, at least in terms of individual talent in the last 10 years,” Morgan said. “I think there are more talented players and maybe that has something to do with this.”

But some coaches believe the sport of baseball itself might be a reason for different teams making it to championships. The favorites often win in high school football and basketball. But in baseball, there is a better chance for some parity. For example, if a team has only one good pitcher, it gives opponents a much better chance of winning in a playoff game.

“I don’t think anybody wants to see the same teams win it over and over,” Morgan said. “In a way, it’s cool to have dynasties and powerhouses. We hope to get to that class someday. But it’s also really cool to see some new teams.”
