Cardinals activate Molina, Martinez
The St. Louis Cardinals activated All-Stars Yadier Molina and Carlos Martínez from the 10-day disabled list.
“It means everything, it really does,” St. Louis outfielder Harrison Bader said about having Molina back. “He’s the glue of the defense and in the dugout. He’s a presence. To have him back is something I’m looking forward to and I’m sure everyone else is too.
“Pretty much the same thing about [Martinez]. Guys like that working together on the same field makes it a special day. To have them both back is going to be a real uplift.”
St. Louis general manager Michael Girsch said he is glad to have players coming off the disabled list.
“It’s nice to sort of hopefully turn the corner on removing guys from the DL more than putting guys on the DL,” Girsch said. “Obviously these two, one’s a Cardinalslegend and one’s on his way to being one, so it’s a greatway to start the series.”

Left-hander Jordan Montgomery will have Tommy John surgery on his elbow this week. Montgomery had been throwing on flat ground but experienced a setback in his latest rehabilitation stint. “He wasn’t comfortable, shut it down that day and then went home to just get checked on again, MRI, and this was the conclusion,” manager Aaron Boone said. “Obviously disappointed for Monty. We were hoping that he was on his way to building back up to be able to pitch for us again this year, but obviously not the case.” Montgomery will have surgery Thursday in New York Thursday.
Red Sox
Boston placed left-handed pitcher Drew Pomeranz on the 10-day disabled list with tendinitis in his left biceps. Pomeranz (1-3) has not pitched longer than four innings in three of his past four starts and has an ERA of 8.61 over eight starts. He previously pitched Thursday, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings at Houston. “Coming out of the Houston start, it was kind of hard for him to like bounce back so we decided to put him on the DL,” manager Alex Cora said.
Tigers
Detroit chose Texas second baseman Kody Clemens with the first pick of the third round of the 2018 draft. He is the son of former star pitcher Roger Clemens. Kody Clemens, a junior, has hit .346 with 14 doubles, 21 home runs and 68 RBIs in 60 games this season.
Angels
Canisius senior pitcher Tyler Smith, a Penn-Trafford High School graduate, was an eighth-round pick by Los Angeles in the MLB draft.
