Dukes will play Irish in basketball in Nov.

-

For the eighth time in its history and first time in the past 24 years, Duquesne men’s basketball team will take on Notre Dame Nov. 20 in the 2018 Gotham Classic.

The program announced its slate in the five-team event Thursday, with the road matchup against the Fighting Irish headlining the event for the Dukes. Duquesne finished the 201718 season 16-16 in Keith Dambrot’s first season as Dukes coach; Notre Dame went 21-15 with an appearance in the NIT.

The previous matchup came Feb. 8, 1995, and the Fighting Irish won, 77-62. The loss snapped a fivegame winning streak for the Dukes in a series which Duquesne leads, 5-2.

Before taking on the Irish, the Dukes will play host to three games of the Gotham Classic. Duquesne will play William & Mary Nov. 10, UIC Nov. 12 and Radford Nov. 17. UIC and Radford each won 20 games last season and made postseason appearances, with the former competing in the CIT and the latter in the NCAA tournament.

Pitt beat Davidson, 94-69, to win the 2015 Gotham Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Traditionally, the Gotham Classic is played in December, with one “showcase” game being played at MSG. The arena was not available this year, so the event chose instead to play the games on campus sites and in November, which worked better for the participating teams’ schedules. The Gotham Classic also did not feature a game at MSG in 2016.
