EU backs Trudeau in Trump feud

-

BRUSSELS— The European Union on Monday backed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after U.S. President Donald Trump branded him “dishonest” and “weak” following a Group of Seven summit of leaders.

European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said the EU “stands fully behind” the joint statement issued at the end of the G-7 meeting in Quebec.

Mr. Trump agreed to a statement on trade but withdrew from it later. He complained he was blindsided by Mr. Trudeau’s criticism of his tariff threats during the premier’s summit-ending news conference.

Fighting in Yemen

SANAA,Yemen — Heavy fighting in Yemen between pro-government forces and Shiite rebels has killed more than 600 people on both sides in recent days, security officials said Monday.

Government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, have been advancing along the western coast in recent weeks as they battle the Iran-allied rebels, known as Houthis. The fighting has escalated as government forces close in on the Red Sea port of Hodeida, a vital lifeline through which most of Yemen’s food and medicine enters.

Migrant boat’s fate

ROME — The fate of a rescue boat carrying more than 600 migrants and refused entry to Italy and Malta remained unclear late Monday, after its nongovernmental organization operator said taking up an offer from Spain may not be possible.

It made clear that Italy, where migrants rescued in the central Mediterranean have routinely been brought in recent years, remained responsible for the situation.

A bitter row broke out between Italy and Malta this past weekend over which country should take in the rescue boat, which picked up the migrants on Saturday and Sunday.
