Mohawk wins to advance to 2A championship
Kaylee Boring was anything but what her surname suggests. Boring provided the excitement for Mohawk by going 3 for 3 with an RBI to help the Warriors advance to the PIAA Class 2A championship.
Mohawk (18-2) defeated Mount Union, 3-1, Monday in the PIAA semifinal round at DuBois City Park.
“This was just a great team win,” said Mohawk coach Brad Hruska. “The girls really stepped up.”
Alyssa Young added an RBI triple for Mohawk that plated sister Ashley Young and gave the Warriors the lead for good.
Trinity Voss picked up the win. She struck out 10 and allowed three hits. Mount Union’s lone run was unearned.
The championship game is slated for 11 a.m. Friday at Penn State.The Warriors will face District 3 winner Upper Dauphin.
Mohawk, the fourth-place finisher from the WPIAL, will play for the first state championship in school history. Prior to this season, the Warriors had never won a state playoff game.
Class 4A
Punxsutawney 3, Mount Pleasant 1: The Vikings will not be defending their state championship after falling in the PIAA semifinals at St. Francis University. Mount Pleasant got back-to-back doubles from Chloe Poulich and then Haylie Brunson in the sixth inning to get on the scoreboard. But Punxsutawney had gone up by belting back-to-back solo homers in the third off of hard-throwing starter Carolyn Alincic. Penn State recruit Kylee Lingenfelter picked up the win.
Class 3A
Philipsburg-Osceola 15, Southmoreland 4: The WPIAL champion Scotties held a 2-1 lead through three innings before the Mounties (24-1) rallied late, including a sevenrun seventh inning, at St. Francis University. Charity Henderson and Bethany Bunner each homered for Southmoreland. Bunner went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the game and Jess Matheny was 2 for 3 with an RBI. The Mounties got two-run home runs from Hannah Thompson and Kam Harris, who also was the winning pitcher.
