Others need to join in Gov. Thornburgh’s call
Thank you, former Gov. Dick Thornburgh, for your commonsense and morally defensible plea to “Let Robert Mueller Do His Job” (Perspectives, June 12).
In the midst of so much unashamedly political tangling, the need for integrity and clarity of purpose was never greater. How refreshing for we lifelong Democrats to be reminded by a lifelong Republican of what really makes America great: respect for its citizens based on deep respect for its laws. Needed are impeccably honest officials willing to cut through personality and partisanship — beyond sound bites and photo ops — in search of basic, uncosmeticized truth.
Much depends on the (hopefully) honorable people we elected to serve. Let’s hear from them as well. BAYLEE and MARSHALL

Is this the country we know and love? SCILLA WAHRHAFTIG East Liberty commonwealth. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas released by the oil and gas industry, comes packaged with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can cause cancer and contribute to the formation of ground-level ozone (smog) that exacerbates asthma and other lung ailments in our most vulnerable citizens, our children.
No child or family is immune to this pollution, and Moms Clean Air Force joins Pennsylvanians in thanking Mr. Wolf for taking this important first step to protect us.

I just read that corporate executives have been on a buying spree thanks to the tax cuts passed by the Republican-led Congress and promoted and signed by President Donald Trump. I’m sure many are saying, “Great, they’re investing in new infrastructure, equipment and raises for working folks.” Oops, not so fast.
Turns out these executives are using Mr. Trump’s gift by buying back their stock, $178 billion in the first quarter, $171 billion in May alone, and $51 billion so far in June. Corporate stock buybacks increase the price of a company’s stock, and since stock options and awards make up a lot of executives’ compensation, guess what? They’re giving themselves a nice fat raise.
So much for helping America’s average working men and women. Anyone surprised? JEFFREY R. HOLST
