BETHEL PARK
Mayor Jack Allen emphasized the municipality’s strong financial footing and significant population growth during his “State of the Municipality” address on Monday.
“Our financial situation is sound,” said Mr. Allen, who pointed out Bethel Park’s 2.53-mill tax rate is “among the very lowest in Allegheny County.”
According to U.S. Census data, the municipality gained 555 residents — a 1.74 percent increase — in 2016-17, bringing its total population to 32,404.
Mr. Allen cited Bethel Park’s residential and commercial development as a draw for prospective residents.
Residential developments include South Hills Village apartments, Cool Springs Assisted Living, Cool Springs Carriage Homes, Bethel Park Senior Housing and Willow Terrace.
Commercial development also continues in the municipality, including the construction of a three-story Guardian Selfstorage facility on Milford Drive and its associated offices at the corner of Route 88 and Milford Drive.
A new Rite-Aid pharmacy is being constructed at the corner of McMurray and Clifton roads, and Millennium Shops, behind Sheetz on Library Road, is nearly filled with tenants. The former Elks Lodge on Route 88 is to be demolished and replaced with new retail space, and a new animal clinic is set to be located on Route 88 at the former location of Bruce Brothers Tires.
The mayor also reminded residents that the Fourth of July Spectacular will be held from 4 to 10 p.m. June 30 at Millennium Park. The event will feature music by No Bad JuJu, inflatable kids’ rides, a petting zoo, a craft tent and fireworks.
