McKeesport’s Marshall all about basketball business

atypical of star athletes. He was big into video games, gadgets and computer science, even as he was throwing down dunks and stuffing guards a foot shorter than him.

“I’m still a little nerd and geek like everyone has talked about,” Marshall said with a laugh, “so now I’m about my business, too.”

The business of basketball, but also beyond it. Marshall loves to invest, and said most of the money he makes overseas goes straight to those efforts. Real estate, stocks, mutual funds, bonds, even cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin, Marshall is all over it.

And he’s trying to help his teammates, too.

“Most teams I go to, I’m the guy most people are coming to. I’m noticing more and more, people are coming to me for financial advice,” Marshall said. “It’s crazy how many people don’t know, so I’m starting to get into that. People, especially pros, don’t understand how to keep your money lasting after you retire. I know a lot of guys, who I play with, who are making money, living paycheck to paycheck, who don’t realize this is going to end eventually. If you’re lucky, 38, 39, maybe 40 — if you’re lucky. I always say, after 40, what are you going to do?”

In the short term, Marshall hopes he can help his squad take home the $2 million prize in The Basketball Tournament. Even split among the roster, that would be a nice chunk of change to invest wisely.
