Lawrenceville girl wins 95th National Marbles Tournament
For the past five years, Madison Johnson has focused on shooting a marble.
The training paid off this week in a big way for the 14year-old from Lawrenceville, who won the 95th National Marbles Tournament on Thursday in Wildwood, N.J.
“It feels really good, because I worked for a very long time trying to get to this point,” she said. “Now that I’ve won, I feel more accomplished.”
Madison is Allegheny
into the Hall of Fame by the tournament committee.
The tournament is predominantly organized by volunteers who share a love for the sport.
According to the tournament’s website, more than 1,200 games were played between the 52 competitors, who were split into 26 boys and 26 girls.
With an age range of 7 to 14, this was Madison’s last chance to compete, particularly after qualifying for nationals five times.
She practiced nearly every day in the month leading up to nationals, said her coach, Dan LaGamba.
He also noted that it wasn’t just the practices — but her dedication to play at home on her own.
“I am super proud of her for everything she’s done,” he said. “It’’s one of those things ... she was working extremely hard over the past five years and was determined to make it happen.
“There’s a sense of accomplishment.”
Now, she is looking forward to playing in the Mason Cup, a tournament many former champions and adult players will participate in this August.
Before then, she will be able to mentor future new players or older ones, who are vying to compete in next year’s tournament.
When asked for a piece of marbling advice, Madison emphasized having determination.
“Keep your head in the game and don’t give up,” she said. “If you start thinking you can’t do it, then you’re not going to get there.”
