Newgarden wins at Elkhart

Pole-sitter Josef Newgarden dominated the IndyCar race at Road America Sunday in Elkhart Lake, Wis., leading 53 of 55 laps for his third victory this season. The defending series champion crossed the finish line with a comfortabl­e 3.38-second cushion over second-place finisher Ryan Hunter-Reay. Points leader Scott Dixon finished third, part of the three-car pack that separated from the field with about13 laps to go. The victory completed an impressive weekend for the Team Penske driver at the 14-turn, 222-milelong track, where Newgarden’s No. 1 Chevy registered thetop speed in practice.

He returned to the podium after a five-race stretch finishing no higher than eighth, dropping him from first to fifth in the driver standings. He picked up his 10th career victory and first at the ruralWisco­nsin road course.

Hunter-Reay just couldn’t catch up after Newgarden got a fresh set of tires on his final stop. A caution-free race also worked to Newgarden’s advantage, with the field unable to reset from a restart. It was the 9th start-to-finish, greenflagr­ace at Road America.

Formula One

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the French Grand Prix from pole position to retake the lead of the F1 title race. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen in his Ferrari crossed second and third to complete the podium at the Paul Ricard Circuitin Le Castellet.

Blake Alexander raced to his first Top Fuel victory in the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Alexander had a 4.011second pass at 297.81 mph to beat Terry McMillen in the final. Matt Hagan edged points leader Courtney Force in the Funny Car final at 288.21 for hisfirst victory this season.

Sprint car driver Jason Johnson died after a crash Saturday night at Beaver Dam Raceway in Wisconsin. Hewas 41.
