Pitt coach resigns, takes Louisville softball job

Pitt softball coach Holly Aprile resigned Sunday to take the head coaching position at Louisville.

Aprile spent the past 10 seasons as head coach and was the ACC coach of the year this past season, when the Panthers won the Coastal Division crown. Before being promoted to head coach, Aprile was an assistant with the Panthers for five seasons.

Aprile, who had 271-234 record overall, led the Panthers to an NCAA tournament appearance in 2015.

Louisville coach Sandy Pearsall retired in June after 19 seasons with the Cardinals.

Soccer

Defender Hugh Roberts scored in the 22nd minute off an assist from defender Todd Pratzner, and Riverhound­s SC (9-1-7) beat Ottawa Fury FC (6-8-3), 1-0, in Ottawa, Ontario. The shutout was goalkeeper Dan Lynd’s ninth of the season and the team’s 12th. The second-place Riverhound­s are a point behind FC Cincinnati in the Eastern Conference of the United Soccer League.

• Maximilian­o Moralez scored in the 85th minute as New York City FC defeated the New York City Red Bulls, 1-0, in Major League Soccer play.

Harness racing

The Meadows Racetrack & Casino will double its total-pool guarantee to $10,000 for its Monday Pick 5 wager, because of a $2,223.18 carryover from Saturdays’ Pick 5 that went uncovered. First post Monday is 1:05 p.m.

Auto racing

Canadian James Hinchcliff­e passed Josef Newgarden with a little more than 40 laps left to win the IndyCar race at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. It was his first victory of the season and first since Long Beach in 2017. Spencer Pigot was a career-best second, followed by Takuma Sato.

• Erik Jones, 22, recorded his first career Monster Series victory in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 late Saturday night at Daytona Internatio­nal Speedway in Daytona, Fla.

• Sebastian Vettel took advantage of a bad start and disastrous first lap for Lewis Hamilton to win the British Grand Prix in Silverston­e, England, and extend his lead in the championsh­ip standings. Vettel finished 2.264 seconds ahead of Hamilton for his fourth win of the season and denied Hamilton a fifth win in a row in his home race.

• Matt Hagan won his second consecutiv­e Funny Car race at the NHRA New England Nationals in Epping, N.H., with a run of 4.156 seconds at 292.01 mph. Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) also were winners at the 13th of 24 events this season.

Pro basketball

The Bulls matched a four-year, $78 million offer sheet and kept Zach LaVine in Chicago. The Sacramento Kings and LaVine agreed to offer terms Friday, but LaVine was a restricted free agent, which meant the Bulls had right of first refusal.

• Brook Lopez, 30 and entering his 11th season, agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Milwaukee Bucks. Lopez averaged 13 points per game last season for the Los Angeles Lakers.

• Zaza Pachulia got a oneyear, $2.4 million contract from the Detroit Pistons after starting 127 regularsea­son games over the past two seasons with the Golden State Warriors.

Women’s pro basketball

Tiffany Hayes had 18 points and the host Atlanta Dream (9-9) held off a late rally to beat the Phoenix Mercury (14-6), 76-70, in WNBA play. Diana Taurasi scored 19 to lead the Mercury.

• Skylar Diggins-Smith had 32 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists to help the visiting Dallas Wings (10-8) beat the New York Liberty (5-14), 97-87. Tina Charles had 26 points for the Liberty.

• Breanna Stewart’s 25 points and 10 rebounds lifted the host Seattle Storm (14-5) to a 97-91 win against the Washington Mystics (126). Elena Delle Donne had 29 for the Mystics.

Elsewhere

Frank Ramsey, an AllAmerica­n at Kentucky and member of seven NBA championsh­ip teams with the Boston Celtics, died Sunday in Madisonvil­le, Ky. He was 86.
