Lineman Goncalves picks Pitt
With the start of training camp just about 72 hours away, Pitt football landed its second verbal commitment in five days when Matt Goncalves announced on Twitter he will join the 2019 recruiting class. AJ Woods, a cornerback from Maryland, did the same Friday.
At 6 feet 6, 305 pounds, Goncalves immediately becomes the largest player in the class and lone offensive lineman. He plays for Eastport-South Manor High School in Manorville, N.Y., in Suffolk County on Long Island.
Unrated and unranked by recruiting websites, Goncalves quickly jumped on his first major-conference offer, which came from Pitt last month. He also had offers from Connecticut, Buffalo and Toledo, among others from the Football Championship Subdivision.
Goncalves is the 16th member of the class, which is still without a wide receiver or interior offensive lineman but has a number of versatile athletes who could slot in at various positions by the time they get to Pitt. The Panthers are also flush with young offensive linemen who have yet to get on the field.

Offensive lineman Trey Smith was dealing with blood clots in his lungs when he missed spring practice. Athletic department spokesman Zach Stipe confirmed that Smith has been cleared to play this season but will be held out of contact until he comes off blood-thinning medication, likely sometime around mid-August.
