Cespedes has his first heel surgery

-

New York Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes had surgery Thursday on his right heel, the first of two procedures that likely will sideline him for eight to 10 months.

Dr. Robert Anderson removed bone calcification in Cespedes’ heel during the operation in Green Bay, Wis. Assistant general manager John Ricco said Thursday that Cespedes will rest for eight to 12 weeks before getting surgery on his left heel.

“The surgery went well as expected, so that was positive news,” Ricco said.

Ricco also said doctors want to make sure Cespedes has some mobility in the right leg before the second surgery.

Cespedes, 32, an outfielder, hit .262 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 38 games this season.

Angels

Star outfielder Mike Trout missed a 4-2 loss Thursday to Tampa Bay because of a bruised right wrist. Trout got hurt while sliding on a stolen base attempt of third in the first inning Wednesday night in a 72 defeat to the Rays. “When I slid into third base, I caught my hand,” Trout said. “Kind of weird. Felt like I just jammed it pretty bad. We taped it. But when I woke up it was pretty sore.” Trout will have an MRI Thursday.

Third baseman Jake Lamb will have left shoulder surgery and miss the rest of the season. Lamb said the damage to his rotator cuff did not cause pain, but limited his ability to swing a bat. He is hoping to be back by spring training in 2019.

Yankees

New York removed Sonny Gray from their starting rotation and replaced him with Lance Lynn, and placed pitcher J.A. Happ on the 10-day disabled list with hand, foot and mouth disease. Gray tied a career high by allowing seven runs while lasting 2⅔ innings Wednesday night against Baltimore. He is 8-8 with a 5.56 ERA this season.
