Bill Elliott to return to racing
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — NASCAR Hall of Fame member Bill Elliott is coming out of retirement to run an Xfinity Series race.
GMS Racing announced Saturday on Twitter that Elliott, 62, will drive the No. 23 Chevrolet Aug. 25 at Road America in Wisconsin.
Elliott, perennially named NASCAR’s most popular driver, hasn’t competed in any of NASCAR’s national series since he drove in the July Cup race at Daytona in 2012. He hasn’t started a race in the secondtier series since 2005.
The news caught Cup series leader Kyle Busch by surprise Saturday night after qualifying.
“How old is he? That’s cool,” Busch said. “Good for him. That will be a unique experience.”
AJ Allmendinger drove the No. 23 to a second-place finish Saturday in the Xfinity race at The Glen.
Joey Logano passed Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski on a restart in the closing laps Saturday and held off his final challenge to win the Xfinity race at Watkins Glen International in New York.
Woman to race Xfinity
Katherine Legge will make her NASCAR debut in a two-race Xfinity Series deal with JD Motorsports. The open-wheel and sports car veteran will race at MidOhio Sports Car Course and Road America in Wisconsin. Legge will drive the No. 15 Chevrolet with sponsorship from Maryland-based aviation and technology integration company Airtec.
