MIDDLEBURY,Vt. — A new analysis of four decades of births shows the age that women become mothers varies significantly.

First-time mothers are older in cities and on the coast, and younger in rural areas, the GreatPlainsandtheSouth. In New York, the average age is 31. In Zapata County, Texas, it’ s 21.

The difference cuts along lines that divide the country elsewhere. The biggest is education. Women with college degrees have children an average of seven years later than those without.

There has long been an age gap for first-time mothers, Ms. Myers said. Yet researchers say the differences are a symptom of the nation’s inequality. As moving up economically becomes harder, mothers’ circumstances could have a bigger effect on children’s futures.

Wildfires kill 7th person

SANFRANCISCO — The Carr Fire in California grew nearly 10,000 acres overnight as authorities tied a seventh death to the blaze.

Authorities said 16 other major fires continued across the state on Saturday. Officials said 40,000 have evacuated and 14,000 firefighters were battling the blazes.

As of Sunday, the Carr Fire destroyed more than 1,600 buildings and more than 154,000 acres of land. The fire grew so intense that at it created its own weather systems, including a tornado-like fire whirl.

While winds diminished Sunday, dry conditions persisted, said Erica Bain, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire. Sunday was the 72nd consecutive day without rain in the area, she said.

The fire was 41 percent contained but Ms. Bain said it was still spreading.

NRA in financial trouble

NEWYORK— The NRA claims it’s facing financial ruin because of a full-frontal assault from the Cuomo administration.

In a recent court filing, the pro-gun group said it suffered tens of millions of dollars in damages as a result of the state’s campaign to dissuade banks and insurance companies from doing business with them.

Mr. Cuomo, New York’s governor, and his state regulators “seek to silence one of America’s oldest constitutional-rights advocates,” the National Rifle Association said in the July 20 filing.

“If I could have put the NRA out of business, I would have done it 20 years ago,” Mr. Cuomo said Friday.

Butina tied to Trump

WASHINGTON— Maria Butina, the Russian gunrights activist charged last month with working as an unregistered agent of the Kremlin, socialized in the weeks before the 2016 election with a former Trump campaign aide who anticipated joining the presidential transition team.

Ms. Butina sought out J.D. Gordon, who served for six months as the Trump campaign’s director of national security before leaving in August 2016 and being offered a role in the Trump transition effort, according to documents and testimony provided to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The two exchanged emails in September and October 2016, culminating in an invitation from Mr. Gordon to attend a concert in Washington. Mr. Gordon also invited Ms. Butina to attend his birthday party in late October of that year.

Prosecutors have said Ms. Butina, 29, who became a graduate student at American University in 2016, attempted to infiltrate the U.S. political system at the direction of a senior Russian official. Her activities came at the same time that, according to U.S. intelligence officials, Moscow was seeking to interfere in the presidential election to help President Donald Trump.
