Osuna addresses new teammates

-

Roberto Osuna met his new Houston Astros teammates Sunday and addressed the club for 10 minutes in a closed-door meeting as he comes off a 75game suspension for violating Baseball’s domestic violence policy.

The defending World Series champions acquired Osuna Monday in a trade with Toronto while he was still serving his suspension.

The All-Star closer was arrested and charged with assaulting his girlfriend May 8 in Toronto. No details have been made public and the next court date in the case is scheduled for Sept. 5.

Osuna offered few details about the morning meeting in the Astros’ clubhouse and did not discuss the case pending against him. Osuna was added to the active roster before Sunday’s game at Los Angeles.

Asked if he could shed some light on why he was suspended, Osuna replied: “Not right now.”

Athletics

Shawn Kelley was acquired by the Oakland for international slot money from the Nationals, who no longer wanted the reliever after he slammed his glove to the ground and glared into Washington’s dugout during a game. The Nationals also sent cash to the Athletics in the swap. Kelley entered the game with Washington ahead 25-1. He was working quickly, and the plate umpire warned him to slow down. After the warning, Kelley gave up a two-run homer, prompting his tantrum.

Padres

San Diego promoted right-hander Trey Wingenter from Class AAA El Paso after losing righthanders Tyson Ross and Jordan Lyles. Ross was claimed by St. Louis and Lyles was picked up by the Brewers. “When you’ve invested into guys, you believe in guys,” manager Andy Green said. “It’s tough watching them walking out that door and go to other places. But both of them are going to good opportunities.”

Dodgers

Brian Dozier delivered a two-run double and Manny Machado had three hits with two runs scored as Los Angeles defeated the Astros, 3-2. With the Dodgers struggling for offense against the team that beat them in last year’s World Series, it was the new additions who came through. Machado was acquired from Baltimore during the All-Star break and Dozier came over from Minnesota at the trade deadline.

Astros

Outfielder George Springer left Houston’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after he injured his left thumb trying to steal second base in the third inning. The Astros said Springer exited with discomfort in his thumb after a headfirst dive into the bag. Astros manager A.J. Hinch said he didn’t “know a lot” about the extent of Springer’s injury. Springer was undergoing medical evaluations and was unavailable for comment.
