Blackout 2K18: Black Gay Prom

-

#PromNight: Do you remember your prom? Whether it was a splashy affair complete with a ballgown and limo ride, or borrowing a suit and tie, everyone’s prom experience is one for the books. But what if you didn’t go to prom? What if you didn’t feel welcome, or felt as though you didn’t fit in? What if you dropped out before prom or couldn’t afford to go? Many students, especially in the LGBTQIA+ community, have had some of these experiences that prevented them the chance for having an unforgettable prom night.

“When we were working on creating events for Blackout 2K18, the community kept bringing up prom. This was a people-driven decision to have this event this year. Everyone deserves a prom,” said John Easter, co-executive director of True T PGH, which presented prom on Friday night at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, Downtown.

“Working with Hotel Monaco was such a pleasure. They were so welcoming to us from day one and really helped us bring our vision to life,” said co-executive director Duane Binion. “It’s just so fancy!” added guest Mahogany Asuncion Rios, snapping a selfie in one of the full-length mirrors lit by candlelight and decorated in red roses. “This event is something our community needs. Our community is subject to violence and drugs, and our youth deserve this second chance that we didn’t have,” said event host Vanessa Marie Carter. The event welcomed 80 partygoers and organizers hope it will return next year to welcome even more within the community, as well as advocates and allies.
