Police probe lemonade stand heist
MONROE, N.C. — Authorities say a teenager who held up a North Carolina lemonade stand for $17 is still at large. They’re hoping to track him down through surveillance footage and possible DNA and fingerprint tests.
Union County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Underwood said Monday that investigators were still looking for the suspect, who pointed a gun at the 9-year-old lemonade vendor and took his cash box.
Mr. Underwood said deputies have asked neighbors to check their home cameras for clues. He said a camouflage hat and BB pistol found nearby may be checked for fingerprints and DNA.
The stickup occurred Saturday, steps from the boy’s home in Monroe, about 30 miles southeast of Charlotte.
Trump endorsement
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed Kansas gubernatorial primary candidate Kris Kobach, throwing his support behind the controversial anti-illegal immigration hardliner who previously served as the vice chair of Mr. Trump’s now-disbanded voting integrity commission.
In a morning tweet , Mr. Trump praised Mr. Kobach, Kansas’ secretary of state, as “a strong and early supporter of mine.”
Mr. Kobach faces six other Republicans in Tuesday’s primary. Polling shows a tight race, with Mr. Kobach and incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer as front-runners.
The president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., has visited Kansas twice to campaign for Mr. Kobach.
Parkland details
MIAMI — Left alone inside a police interview room hours after he had gunned down 17 of his former classmates and educators at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., the confessed gunman, Nikolas Cruz, said he no longer wanted to live.
Detective John Curcio of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office had stepped out to get a glass of water for the suspect. The recorder inside the room was still running.
The scene would repeat itself several times throughout the night, according to a partial transcript of the interview released Monday: Mr. Curcio would leave the room and Cruz, 19, would talk to himself about dying, about how he was “worthless.”
The transcript also shows he blamed a “demon” voice in his head for his actions.
Wall budget mistakes
WASHINGTON— The Trump administration could waste billions on a border wall because it failed to fully account for factors like varying terrain and land ownership along the Southwest border, according to a new report.
The report, by the Government Accountability Office, found Customs and Border Protection did not consider the cost of building along each segment of the border, which can vary depending on topography, land ownership and other factors.
The report also found that the agency selected locations for barriers without fully assessing where they were needed.
