Driver faces DUI charge after hitting 15 vehicles

Pittsburgh police said a Swissvale man had a bloodalcoh­ol level nearly double the legal limit when he struck as many as 15 parked cars while driving Thursday night in Mount Washington.

Andre Mills, 48, was charged Friday with driving under the influence, accidents involving damage to unattended vehicles, and other offenses. No one was injured. Officers responded about 9:30 p.m. Thursday to Southern Avenue for a report of an accident. Investigat­ors discovered that a driver had struck up to 15 cars parked along Southern Avenue, Simms Street and Penelope Street.

Police found Mr. Mills in his car, which was heavily damaged, according to a criminal complaint.

An officer noted in the complaint that Mr. Mills’ eyes were bloodshot, watery and glassy, and he had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. He also had a hard time maintainin­g balance with his hands cuffed behind his back.

The officer said he found an open 24-ounce can of Colt 45 malt liquor on the floor on the passenger side of Mr. Mills’ car.

Police brought Mr. Mills to the Zone 6 police station and tested his blood alcohol level. According to the complaint, Mr. Mills submitted two usable samples, with the lowest test showing that he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.135.

The legal blood-alcohol level in Pennsylvan­ia is 0.07.

Mr. Mills was taken to the Allegheny County Jail, where authoritie­s said two plastic baggies of marijuana were found in his left sock.

He is scheduled for a preliminar­y hearing on Thursday.
