Man’s body recovered from Allegheny River

-

The body of a 51-year-old man was recovered Saturday afternoon from the Allegheny River near Plum, police said.

Emergency crews responded about 10:30 a.m. to the area of Barking Road after a boater called 911 and said his friend went into the river and didn’t resurface.

Plum police said the two men and a dog launched around 8 a.m. from the Springdale Borough Boat Dock to go fishing.

The men realized they had to make some repairs to their fishing tackle and decided to cross the river to the Plum side where the dog could swim in shallow water, police said.

The 51-year-old man entered the water “voluntarily,” police said, but he began to struggle staying afloat. His friend, who was still on the boat, threw him some type of flotation device.

The man started swimming toward shore, but he went under the water and did not resurface, police said.

Crews found the man’s body shortly before 2 p.m. about 15 feet from shore in water about 9 feet deep.

Police are withholding the victim’s identification until his family can be notified.

Allegheny County police and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission continue to investigate.
