Kavanaugh rush

-

The Republican Party is in a big hurry to get Brett Kavanaugh seated on the Supreme Court. Republican leaders seem to think that it is critical to the nation that the seat be filled as soon as possible.

Three years ago, they seemed just fine to allow a Supreme Court seat to remain open for well over a year. In justifying their action, they also argued that an election was nearing (still almost a year away) and that it was only right to let the people decide. Clearly, they were taking a chance since it was highly likely that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency. However, they publicly admitted that they were willing to block any Clinton nomination for her entire term should that happen.

Now, the shoe is on the other foot. An election is approaching (only two months away) and the threat of a blue wave has them worried. It seems for the sake of fairness, the Republicans have already set the precedent. Yes, indeed, should we not delay this process until after the election so the people can decide?

If the Republicans remain in power after the election, then the people have spoken. However, if the blue wave does occur, then this might be at least in part a comment on how the electorate feels about Judge Kavanaugh and the decisions of the current administration.

If they rush the proceedings through and a blue wave occurs in November, then it may well be that the last two Supreme Court justices were appointed to their positions against the will of a significant majority of the electorate. This would be another blow to the health of our democracy that we should all be concerned about regardless of how we feel about Judge Kavanaugh. TONY DeCARIA Murrysville
