After a year of planning, the University of Pittsburgh is gearing up for a long-term transformation that could include new student housing, improved landscaping and state-of-the-art facilities.
A draft of the plan was unveiled Friday during a meeting of university trustees. It included input from Pitt faculty, students, staff and others.
The campus overhaul would aim to improve use of space, revamp recreation and athletic facilities, and address needs of the health sciences schools, according to a 52-page proposal.
It includes plans for housing options to entice more students to live on campus; creates an “athletics-oriented neighborhood” with numerous facilities clustered together; calls for more green spaces and pedestrian pathways; and suggests clearer street-level markings that promote the university.
The university plans to host information sessions about the plan Oct. 8 and Oct. 9.
“As Pitt’s upward trajectory continues, this plan will help the university excel academically, lead in research and innovation, and strengthen its ties with the community we call home,” Greg Scott, Pitt’s senior vice chancellor for business and operations, who oversaw the creation of the plan, stated in a news release.
