Pittsburgh needs more trains heading east

-

I heartily agree with Brian O’Neill’s column about increased train service from Pittsburgh to the East Coast (Sept. 27, “Another Train to Pittsburgh! But Probably Not.”). I ride the train, as does my daughter, several times a year to Newark, N.J., and I often wish that there were more choices and that it was a bit faster.

I actually remember when there were two trains a day from Pittsburgh to the East Coast. Even having several trains a day to Harrisburg, where riders could make connections, would be a great improvement.

With flying becoming such an unpleasant ordeal — sort of like cattle crammed into a holding pen — taking a train can be much more civilized. And it has to be more beneficial for the environment, as well. Maybe I will live long enough to see two trains a day going east from Pittsburgh. JUDITH SUTTON Mt. Lebanon America’s poverty line. Among other things, this means there are babies among us living in families that can’t afford food or diapers! Another 20 percent live in families that experience significant episodic financial shortfalls. There are communities all around our region where over 50 percent of the children are living in poverty.

What would Mister Rogers say?

What future do we imagine for them and for our region if we don’t find a way to ensure that all children living among us have the resources they need to grow and thrive and contribute to the generation following them?

It is time to dream of another America, one that fully loves all its children and invests in their and our future. KEN THOMPSON, MD
