Early job at Mineo’s taught responsibility

-

When I was 15 years old, I was hired by Mineo’s. John, the owner referred to in the article (Sept. 29, “A Slice of Life: Mineo’s Marks 6 Decades in Pittsburgh”), approached me through a friend of mine and asked me if I wanted to work there. (Back then in the late 1960s, its location was one storefront on Murray Avenue and much smaller.)

I have to say working as a teenager at Mineo’s was instrumental in teaching me about responsibility and building a good work ethic. Back then, Mineo’s Pizza House was a relatively fledgling business. Now, through the generations of family members, their deserved success is well-known, not only in Pittsburgh but far and wide.

And the pizza has never been compromised. To put it in perspective, a large with pepperoni during the Steelers’ dreadful performance against the Ravens made even that fiasco palatable. JIM SCIULLI Forest Hills graduated from Pittsburgh Allderdice High School in 1974.

Let Pittsburgh be the leader in honoring and celebrating science excellence with the same gusto we celebrate athletic excellence. What a role model she is for our Pittsburgh youth. Let’s parade in the streets and celebrate. JANET KINNANE Squirrel Hill

In the course of his angry defense, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh uttered this astonishing charge: “This whole two-week effort has been a calculated and orchestrated political hit, fueled with apparent pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election. Fear that has been unfairly stoked about my judicial record, revenge on behalf of the Clintons and millions of dollars in money from outside left-wing opposition groups.”

Equal parts partisan and paranoid, this statement should have been enough to immediately disqualify Judge Kavanaugh from consideration for the court.

The fact that he still has solid Republican support raises an interesting question: Do the Republicans want to pack the court with hardline right-wingers who will allow gerrymandering and voter suppression? It may be the only way the Republicans can stay in power. EUGENE STEVICK
