The continued fight for freedom and justice

-

As the nation intensely watched the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the highest court of our land, many of us kept pondering how several of our so-called senators could allow uncorroborated witnesses to publicly assassinate the character of a credible judge and humiliate his loving family.

Many reputable prosecutors commented that without corroborating witnesses or supporting evidence, such accusations would never be admitted in a court of law. Yet these accusers were allowed to give testimony that could not even be corroborated by one of the people they referenced. The browbeating and misleading tactics of some members of the Senate Judiciary Committee were not only improper, but appeared to be highly manipulative. Even after the FBI cleared Judge Kavanaugh recently, and numerous times over many years leading up to his confirmation hearing, many of his accusers are continuing to pursue their lynchmob tactics.

John F. Kennedy once said “Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer, but the right answer.” In essence, it matters not what your party affiliation may be or who you might prefer as the next appointee to the Supreme Court. More so, what should matter to each and every one of us is that a very fundamental principle was violated and that is that no one should be presumed guilty without clear and concise evidence to support such accusations.

Surely such unfounded tactics exemplify those of the Salem witch trials or underdeveloped countries that condemn innocent people without solid corroboration or evidence to back up such accusations. Along with many veterans, I fought for freedom and justice. Making what may be false and unfounded accusations does not exemplify what we fought for.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Making what may be unfounded accusations against someone violates what he taught us and someday could come back to jeopardize our very freedoms and those of our loved ones. MATT DROZD Ross
