Hurricanes outlast Rangers

-

RALEIGH, N.C. — Warren Foegele had two goals and an assist, Andrei Svechnikov got his first career goal and the Hurricanes rallied to beat the New York Rangers, 8-5, Sunday.

Svechnikov, the No. 2 overall pick in June’s draft, deflected Justin Faulk’s shot in front of the net with 9:16 remaining to break a 55 tie. Foegele followed with his second goal 47 seconds later, and Teuvo Teravainen added an empty-netter to secure Carolina’s first home win under new coach Rod Brind’Amour.

Svechnikov’s go-ahead score was one of four unanswered goals by the Hurricanes in the third period as they erased a 5-4 deficit. Lucas Wallmark scored the tying goal for the Hurricanes.

Jordan Martinook, Jordan Staal and Micheal Ferland also scored. Justin Williams had three assists for Carolina.

The Rangers fumbled leads of 2-0, 3-2, 4-3, and 5-4.

Brind’Amour won his first ever game on the road on Friday in Columbus.

Jimmy Vesey and Chris Kreider each scored twice and Pavel Buchnevich added a goal for New York.

Maple Leafs

Morgan Rielly scored 19 seconds into overtime, John Tavares had three goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs spoiled Chicago’s home opener with a victory, 7-6, against the Blackhawks.

Auston Matthews added two goals and two assists for Toronto in the opener of a four-game trip. Rielly also had two assists and Kasperi Kapanen finished with a goal and an assist, helping the Maple Leafs bounce back from Saturday night’s loss to Ottawa, 5-3.

Garret Sparks, who is from the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst, made 25 saves to get the win in his first NHL game since 2016.

Chicago was looking for its first 3-0 start since the 2012-13 season, but it was unable to clamp down on Toronto’s high-scoring lines. Patrick Kane scored twice in the final two minutes of regulation. Defensemen Duncan Keith and rookie Henri Jokiharju each had three assists.
