Central Valley stuns Aliquippa

Top-ranked Quips lose first game of season

Central Valley pulled the biggest upset of the high school football season Friday with 14-8 victory against Aliquippa. The Quips (91, 6-1) entered the game ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL and PIAA by the Pittsburgh PostGazett­e.

Central Valley (5-5, 5-2) opened the scoring with a 22-yard run by Jawon Hall in the first quarter, but the extra point attempt failed.

Aliquippa scored its only points later in the quarter on a 38-yard pass from Eli Kosanovich to M.J. Devonshire. A 2-point conversion run by Avante McKenzie gave the Quips an 8-6 lead.

Noah Thompson scored the deciding touchdown for the Warriors on a 3-yard run in the second quarter. A 2-point pass from Ameer Dudley to Matt Ramsey capped the scoring.

More Class 3A

Beaver Falls 54, Hopewell 6: Dayln Brickner threw for two touchdowns and scored two more to lead the No. 2 Tigers (8-2, 6-1) to a Tri-County West Conference victory against the visiting Vikings (2-8, 1-6). Brickner completed 5 of 8 passes for 111 yards and connected with Brice Anderson and Josh Hough. Brickner also scored on a 1yard sneak and a 79-yard punt return. Hough also scored on a 1-yard run.

North Catholic 64, Deer Lakes 3: Zack Rocco threw for five touchdowns and ran for another, as the No. 4 Trojans (9-1, 7-1) dominated the Lancers (3-6, 3-5) in a Big East Conference road game. Rocco completed 7 of 12 passes for 152 yards and connected with Nick Maher on touchdown passes of 49 and 15 yards. He also threw scoring strikes to Nikhai Hill-Green and Rashad Allen. Anthony Serventi rushed for 137 yards on seven carries and scored twice on runs of 7 and 42 yards for the Trojans.

Keystone Oaks 41, Waynesburg 6: Michael Daure rushed for 169 yards on only eight carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Golden Eagles (6-4, 3-4) to a TriCounty West Conference road victory against the Raiders (2-8, 0-7). Daure scored on runs of 57, 2, 1 and 30 yards. Daure finished the season with 1,546 yards on 164 carries. The Golden Eagles’ Logan Shrubb completed 7 of 8 passes for 150 yards and connected with C.J. Morrow on touchdown passes of 20 and 23 yards.

Elizabeth Forward 44, Yough 0: Zach Benedek scored on two touchdowns and threw for two more, as the No. 5 Warriors (8-1, 7-1) blanked the visiting Cougars (3-7, 3-5) in the Big East Conference. Benedek scored on a 70-yard intercepti­on return and a 65-yard run. He also connected with Chase Whatton and Nate Alberts on touchdown passes. It was the third shutout in four weeks for the Warriors.

Class 4A

Thomas Jefferson 37, West Mifflin 6: Max Shaw rushed for 220 yards on 31 carries and scored on runs of 57, 2 and 15 yards to lead the top-ranked Jaguars (9-0, 70) to a road victory against the Titans (5-5, 5-2) in the Big Eight Conference. Shane Stump and Dan Deabner connected on two touchdown passes for the Jaguars. West Mifflin led, 6-0, at halftime.

South Fayette 31, Montour 0: Jamie Diven threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the No. 2 Lions (9-1, 7-0) recorded a road shutout in the Northwest Eight Conference against the Spartans (3-7, 3-4). Diven completed 12 of 27 passes for 237 yards. His touchdown passes were to RayQuin Glover, Andrew Franklin and Mike Trimbur, who led the Lions with seven receptions.

Belle Vernon 55, Ringgold 0: The No. 3 Leopards (8-1, 6-1) recorded their third shutout in four weeks and fourth overall with a blowout of the winless Rams (0-10, 0-7). Ryan Hamer rushed for 94 yards on 16 carries and scored on runs of 12 and 15 yards. Also scoring touchdowns for Belle Vernon were Andrew Pacek, Anthony Bertram, Larry Calloway, Mason Pascoe, Gage Rogge and Tyler Kovatch.

Blackhawk 14, Beaver 13: A missed 2point conversion attempt by the No. 5 Bobcats (7-3, 4-3) was the difference in this Northwest Eight Conference showdown with the No. 4 host Cougars (9-1, 6-1). The Cougars’ Josh Butcher tied the score with a 16yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and Nathan Burawa kicked the extra point to provide the winning point. Butcher led all rushers with 128 yards on 22 carries. Beaver’s Brodie List threw for one score and ran for another.

Quaker Valley 34, South Park 14: Isaac Guss and Ethan Moore each scored two touchdowns as the Quakers (5-4, 5-2) clinched third place in the Tri-County West Conference with its win against the visiting Eagles (2-7, 2-5). Guss scored on a 1-yard run and a 43-yard pass from Moore. Moore, who completed 9 of 17 passes for 102 yards, scored on runs 2 and 9 yards.

Mount Pleasant 49, Uniontown 13: Jake Johnson scored three touchdowns to lead the Vikings (2-8, 2-6) to a convincing Big East Conference victory against the visiting Red Raiders (0-10, 0-8). Johnson ran 37 yards for one score and caught touchdown passes from Luke Pieszak that covered 31 and 70 yards.
