Sore foot keeps Leonard out of lineup vs. Lakers

-

Kawhi Leonard sat out with foot soreness when the Toronto Raptors faced the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday night.

Leonard injured his left foot late in the fourth quarter of Toronto’s win Friday night at Phoenix, and coach Nick Nurse said the Raptors are being careful with their superstar.

The decision deprived Lakers fans of their only chance this season to see Leonard, who could be an unrestricted free agent coveted by their team next summer. Leonard grew up in Southern California’s Inland Empire area, one hour east of Los Angeles.

Leonard is sitting out for the third time in his first 10 games with the Raptors. He missed two games last month, skipping half of two back-to-back sets.

Lakers

Los Angeles is expected to sign Tyson Chandler once he clears waivers, sources said Saturday night, after Chandler reached an agreement for a buyout with the Phoenix Suns that will allow him to become a free agent. Chandler, 36, has averaged 8.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 18 seasons. The 7-foot-1 center from Dominguez High in Compton went from high school to the NBA as the No. 2 overall pick in 2001 by the Los Angeles Clippers, who traded him to Chicago in the Elton Brand deal. Chandler is in the fourth year of a contract that would have paid him $13.5 million this year.

Knicks

Forward Kevin Knox missed his seventh game with a sprained left ankle. Knox thinks he’s ready to play but coach David Fizdale isn’t so sure. “He’s not making the diagnosis — my 19year-old rookie. I told him I want him to play 5-on-5 first. I know he feels great, but at the same time we have to be sure. Also, guard Courtney Lee has yet to play this year with neck spasms. “I couldn’t [give an estimate],” Fizdale said. “I have no idea. I’m hoping soon, just for his sake.”

Kings

Sacramento set a franchise high with 56 threepoint attempts Sunday against the Bucks. “Obviously, just to get up to 56 3point attempts is a lot, but that’s what they do,” coach Dave Joerger said. Milwaukee routed Sacramento, 144109, improving to 8-1 — the best nine-game start in franchise history.
