Detours begin Tuesday around the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies near Bridgeville as part of Southern Beltway construction.
Throughout the project, visitors to the cemetery just south of the Allegheny County line may have to use different routes to get there, but the facility will remain open. Beginning Tuesday, a portion of Morgan Road that provides direct access to the cemetery will be closed from Morganza Road to the bridge over Interstate 79.
During the first stage of the work, Morgan Road will be closed east of Interstate 79. Traffic will be detoured from Morganza Road using County Line Road to the cemetery. At that time, crews will replace and relocate the bridge over I79 to the south of its present location.
Then a roundabout will be built where Morgan, Baker and Morganza roads come together. That will allow traffic using Morgan Road to get to the cemetery.
The second stage of work, which shouldn’t interfere with access to the cemetery, will include closing County Line Road and finishing work on Morgan.
Work on Morgan Road began last month by Independence
Excavating of Cleveland under a $23.6 million contract with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and is expected to last about a year. Some work in the area of the roundabout likely will carry over until early 2020.
This project is part of the $800 million Southern Beltway project, a 13-mile toll road that will connect Interstate 79 and Route 22 along the Allegheny-Washington County border. Most of the highway should open in late 2021.
