New security measures arrive at Benedum on Light Up Night
As Pittsburghers prepare to face the parking and traffic challenges of Light Up Night on Friday, here is one thing more to take into account this year: Metal detectors and bag inspections have arrived at the Benedum Center, which is expecting a sold-out crowd to see comedian Billy Gardell.
The advice from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is unchanged from when the
new security measures were announced on Oct. 1: pack light and arrive early, and as an enticement, refreshments at the venue will be half-off regular price, starting a half-hour before showtime.
The Friday date for Pittsburgh native Gardell, star of TV’s “Mike and Molly,” was added after Saturday’s show was sold out. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., and the Trust has suggested patrons arrive 45 minutes before the curtain goes up.
The new security measures at the largest Trust venues first went into effect at the Byham Theater on Oct. 13.
“After almost a month of the enhanced security measures in the Byham Theater and August Wilson Center, we have received a positive response from our guests as we ensure their safety,” the Trust said in a statement. “The most successful performances with the security have been when people arrive early. Guests have also been helpful as they follow our bag policy and the expedited lane for those who do not have bags has helped greatly.”
The new metal detectors do not require cell phones or keys be removed from pockets, and if you are carrying a purse, be aware that it may not exceed 16 inches by 16 by 8 inches. There also are entry points that account for accessibility. For more information, visit the Trust Security Screening and Prohibited Items FAQ web page.
