Selfless act appreciated amid week of tragedy

-

On Saturday, Nov. 3, I stopped at the Allegro Bakery in Squirrel Hill to purchase bread. Fishing for my credit card to pay for my purchase, I realized my card was missing.

I told the salesperson that I couldn’t pay until I located my card. I left the store, proceeded to my car, and began the search — car seat, car floor, my jacket pockets, and, of course, my purse.

There it was, hiding behind other cards in my wallet. During my search, a man holding my selected bread knocked on the passenger side of my car door. I assumed he thought I had forgotten to take my bread from the store. Since my locks no longer work well on my 2000 Honda, I couldn’t open the window from my side.

However, I kept shaking my head “no” to let him know that I had not forgotten the bread. He finally got the message. I then entered the bakery once again, took out my wallet, produced my card and asked the sales clerk for my rye bread.

“Oh, there’s no charge,” she said. “A really nice woman and her husband paid for your bread. So, here it is.”

I was truly shocked and then truly touched. Since the sales clerk did not know the name of the generous people, I hope that one or both of them read this.

Thank you, dear neighbors, for your kind deed. At the end of what was a most tragic and painful week, you helped me to smile.
