1874 British statesman Sir Winston Churchill was born at Blenheim Palace.

1950 Pittsburgh tow trucks began removing some 5,000 snowbound autos from trolley routes. Snow-removal machines were also in use.

1955 Pennsylvan­ia College for Women was renamed Chatham College — later Chatham University — and announced a $12 million developmen­t program.

1982 The Michael Jackson album “Thriller” was released by Epic Records.

1991 Edwin Grinberg, who served with distinctio­n for two terms on the Pittsburgh school board, ended his service as a board member and finance chairman by recommendi­ng a settlement with the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers and a balanced budget with no tax increase.

2013 Paul Crouch, 79, an American televangel­ist who had built what has been called the world’s largest Christian broadcasti­ng network, died in Orange, Calif. Some items are from Stefan Lorant’s “Pittsburgh: The Story of an American City” (digital.library.pitt.edu/chronology).
