Squirrel Hill accident kills aunt of councilman

-

Authorities have identified the woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle late Wednesday in Squirrel Hill as the aunt of Pittsburgh City Councilman Corey O’Connor.

Margery A. “Dee-dee” Pelled, 66, of Squirrel Hill, was the half-sister of Mr. O’Connor’s mother, Judy O’Connor, the councilman’s office confirmed Friday.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office identified Ms. Pelled as the victim in Wednesday’s accident, which occurred about 9 p.m. at the intersection of Shady Avenue and Northumberland Street.

She was transported to a hospital in critical condition. She was pronounced dead at 10:45 p.m. Thursday. The medical examiner’s office on Friday ruled her death an accident due to head and torso injuries.

Police continue to investigate the accident. The driver of the vehicle has not been publicly identified.

Ms. Pelled belonged to Shaare Torah Congregation in Squirrel Hill.

Her family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.

“Dee-dee was known for her heart of gold,” the GoFundMe page reads. “She was especially careful with two mitzvos, Hachnasos Orchim (inviting guests) and Ahavas Yisroel (loving your fellow Jew).

“Her Shabbos table was always filled with guests and everyone always felt welcome and at home. Her passing has created an indescribable void amongst her family, friends, and community.”

The synagogue said the funeral was Friday with burial in Homewood Cemetery in Point Breeze.

Mr. O’Connor represents council District 5, which includes part of Squirrel Hill and much of Pittsburgh’s other East End communities.
