Radford stuns No. 17 Texas on late layup

Carlik Jones made a spinning layup and a free throw with 24.5 seconds left, sending Radford to a 62-59 upset of No. 17-ranked Texas Friday night in Austin, Texas.

Devin Hutchison made 1 of 2 free throws with 11 seconds remaining before Texas’ Jase Febres missed a 3-pointer to tie and Radford rebounded to end the game.

It was the second big road win for Radford (6-1), which beat Notre Dame earlier this season. Texas (5-2) came in with their highest ranking in four seasons under coach Shaka Smart, but shot just 35 percent at home.

The Highlander­s were the 2018 Big South Conference tournament champions and made the NCAA tournament before losing to eventual champion Villanova.

Michigan State

Cassius Winston scored 22 points and Nick Ward had 20 to lead No. 9 Michigan State past Rutgers, 78-69, in the Big Ten opener. After a back-and-forth first half Winston hit a 3-pointer to give Michigan State (52) the 39-37 lead against Rutgers (5-2) at the break. The Spartans are back to their winning ways after an overtime loss at Louisville.

Wisconsin

D’Mitrik Trice scored 20 points to lead No. 22 Wisconsin (7-1) which held on to defeat No. 14 Iowa (6-1), 72-66, in the first Big Ten Conference game for both teams. Tyler Cook led the Hawkeyes with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Mississipp­i State

Nick Weatherspo­on hit-two 3-pointers in the closing minutes, and No. 25 Mississipp­i State (6-1), which trailed most of the game, rallied to a 65-58 victory against Dayton (4-3) . The Bulldogs salvaged their first true road game by hitting late 3s after missing 15 of their first 19 tries from behind the arc. Weatherspo­on finished with 14 points.

Buffalo

Jeremy Harris scored 21 points as No. 21 Buffalo beat Milwaukee (2-5), 96-77, in the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic in Northern Ireland. The Bulls improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1930-31 season. Buffalo advanced to championsh­ip Saturday in the Goliath bracket where they will meet San Francisco (7-0).
