Globe nominees include Billy Porter, film shot here

The partially filmed-inPittsburgh Showtime drama “Escape at Dannemora” and Pittsburgh native Billy Porter both garnered nominations Thursday in the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards.

“Escape at Dannemora” was nominated in the best limited series or motion picture made for television category. The production used exterior shots of the former State Correctional Institution Pittsburgh in Woods Run to help depict the story based on a real-life prison escape in 2015. The seven-part series was directed by Ben Stiller and stars Patricia Arquette, who is nominated for best actress, Benicio Del Toro, Paul Dano and Bonnie Hunt. It airs at 10 p.m. Sundays.

Mr. Porter is nominated for best performance by an actor in a TV series — drama for his role in FX’s “Pose.”

“I’m so grateful to have lived long enough to see this day — a day where the stories of LGBTQ people of color take our rightful place in our collective human narrative,” Mr. Porter said of his nomination. “No more hiding. We here and we ain’t goin’ nowhere!”

Set in 1987, “Pose” (9 p.m. Sunday, FX) uses the backdrop of New York City drag ball culture — transwomen strutting their stuff dressed in their finest evening wear, competing for trophies.

The story begins as Blanca (MJ Rodriguez) breaks from the “House of Abundance” and former housemother Electra (Dominique Jackson) to form her own house, taking in dancer Damon (Ryan Jamaal Swain) after he’s kicked out of his Allentown, Pa., home when he comes out as gay to his parents.

Mr. Porter plays Pray Tell, emcee of the balls and a support figure to Blanca.

The Golden Globes is shaping up to be a battle of blockbusters versus indies.

In the best motion picture — drama category, “Black Panther,” “BlackKkKlansman” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “A Star Is Born” will be competing against each other.

That last film proved to be a boon for its star Bradley Cooper, who was also nominated in the director and best performance by an actor in a motion picture — drama category.

The Golden Globes will be awarded Jan. 6 in Beverly Hills.
