Hurricanes recall previously waived goaltender from AHL Charlotte

-

The Carolina Hurricanes recalled goaltender Scott Darling on Sunday from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.

Darling was placed on NHL waivers Nov. 29 by the Hurricanes but went unclaimed and then was assigned to the Checkers.

An injury to goalie Curtis McElhinney led to Darling’s recall. The Hurricanes recalled goalie Alex Nedeljkovic for Friday’s road game against the Anaheim Ducks, Nedeljkovic making the cross-country flight and serving as a backup to Petr Mrazek and allowing Darling to stay with the Checkers and play Saturday against the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Darling has appeared in five games this season with the Checkers, including a conditioning stint, and has a 3-1-0 record with a 2.35 goalsagainst average and .911 save percentage. With the Hurricanes, he has a 2-4-1 record with 3.14 GAA and 892 save percentage in seven games.

Flames

Calgary moved ahead of Central Division leader Nashville and into first place in the Western Conference with a 5-2 win late Saturday against the Predators, their fifth in a row. “We have a great team in here,” said Garnett Hathaway, who tied a career-high with his fourth goal.

Canucks

Brock Boeser scored his second career hat trick, and Elias Pettersson had a goal and four assists as the Vancouver Canucks beat host St. Louis, 6-1, to win consecutive games for the first time since winning three in a row Oct. 29-Nov. 2. Vancouver was 2-10-2 in its previous 14 games. Boeser’s previous hat trick was Nov. 4, 2017, against the Penguins.
