Iowa State ensures head coach staying
Iowa State and coach Matt Campbell have agreed to a contract extension through 2024, a sign that one of the hottest names in the annual coaching carousel is staying put.
The Cyclones announced Campbell’s extension Sunday, also saying they will allocate an extra $1 million for assistant coaches and support staff.
Terms of Campbell’s new deal, which was agreed upon by Campbell and athletic director Jamie Pollard in a meeting Friday, were not disclosed. But Campbell and Iowa State agreed to a 6-year, $22.5 million contract last November.
“We’re pleased to invest further in a group of coaches and staff that have quickly raised the standards for Iowa State football,” Pollard said. “Matt and I both agreed about the importance of rewarding his staff to keep the momentum going.”
The No. 25 Cyclones (8-4) have posted back-to-back eight-win seasons, and their six victories in the Big 12 Conference were the most in school history. Iowa State’s third-place finish in the league was its best in 40 years.
Iowa State will close the season Dec. 28 when it faces No. 12 Washington State (10-2) in the Alamo Bowl.
“Our staff is committed to raising this program to a championship level and it’s important for our team, our fans and prospective Cyclones to know that we are fully invested in the future of Iowa State football,” Campbell said.

Army’s Jay Bateman was hired to serve as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. Bateman spent the past five seasons at Army, with this year’s team ranking ninth in total defense by allowing 293.5 yards per game. Bateman joins the staff of new coach Mack Brown, who previously named Tommy Thigpen as the other co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Brown is starting his second stint with the Tar Heels after replacing Larry Fedora, who was fired after seven seasons.

Former Rice coach David Bailiff has been hired to coach at the Division II school, replacing Colby Carthel, who became the coach at Football Championship Subdivision team Stephen F. Austin. Bailiff was Rice’s coach for 11 seasons until he was fired after the Owls went 1-11 in 2017. He was Texas State’s coach from 2004-06 before going to Rice, where he had two 10win seasons and twice was the Conference USA coach of the year.
UCLA
Justin Frye was promoted to offensive coordinator for next season. Frye was the offensive line coach while coach Chip Kelly went without an offensive coordinator in his first season in Westwood. UCLA finished 3-9, but beat crosstown rival Southern California and had a steadily improving offense late in the season. Frye spent the previous five seasons as the run game coordinator and offensive line coach at Boston College. He has coached at Temple, Florida and Indiana.
