Wesco scoops up another lighting distributor

- By Anya Litvak

Wesco International Inc. is back on the acquisition train.

The Station Square-based distributor of industrial, construction and other supplies announced it is buying the U.S. and Canadian assets of Sylvania Lighting Solutions. The deal is expected to close in March. Terms were not disclosed.

Wesco, which uses the tagline “one source for everything you need,” has been expanding its product and service offerings to stretch far beyond lighting. But the momentum in the country’s effort for energy efficiency represents a growing market.

The company has made 14 acquisitions since 2010, many of those in the lighting space. It took a break from such deals during 2017 and most of 2016, but signaled in its latest annual report that the hiatus is temporary.

That the lighting industry is so fragmented means there’s room for more acquisitions, Wesco wrote. The same prediction has appeared in its annual reports for several years.

Wesco has 9,100 employees worldwide. The Massachusetts lighting firm, Sylvania Lighting Solutions, has about 220 in the U.S. and Canada.

In its latest investor presentation, Wesco said the outlook for 2019 indicates the company expects to grow between 3 percent and 6 percent this year. It is expected to announce its full 2018 results on Jan. 31.
