1845 Congress decided all national elections will be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

1944 Private haulers, hired by Pittsburgh to collect accumulate­d garbage during a strike by municipal garbage truck drivers, operated under protection of an 80-member police squad after some trucks were attacked by roving pickets.

1978 Rock musician Terry Kath, a key member of the group Chicago, accidental­ly shot and killed himself after a party in Woodland Hills, Calif. He was 31.

1999 The Bost Building in Homestead was recognized as a National Landmark for serving as the steelworke­rs’ headquarte­rs during the Homestead Strike. August R. Carlino, executive director of the Steel Industry Heritage Corp., which owned the Bost Building, planned a $4 million renovation.

2009 President Barack Obama quietly ended the Bush administra­tion’s ban on giving federal money to internatio­nal groups that performed abortions or provided informatio­n on the option.
