Panthers win to remain hot

Upper St. Clair is rolling in Class 6A

From local dispatches Upper St. Clair has rebounded well since losing a first-place Section 2 showdown to Mt. Lebanon last week.

Since that time, the Panthers (16-1, 5-1) have reeled off three victories, and Peters Township (10-5, 2-4) became their latest victim as sophomore Luke Gensler hit three 3-pointers as part of his 15 points to lead Class 6A No. 3 Upper St. Clair to a 58-45 win against the Indians.

Dylan King scored 20 points and hit a tip-in at the buzzer to get Trinity (7-8, 4-4) into overtime, but the Hillers ended up losing their second in a row as James Eubanks dropped in a game-high 22 points to lead three Spartans players in double-figures, and Montour (9-7, 6-3) pulled out a 59-53 win for its fifth victory in its past six outings.

Bryce Butler scored 29 points and Reed Fenton added 23 to lead Class 6A No. 1 Latrobe (13-2, 6-0) to a 79-63 Section 3 win at Fox Chapel (9-6, 4-2).

Burrell (5-9, 4-4) did not score a point in the first quarter, but Logan Bitar made up for it as he rained down a game-high 39, and the Bucs topped South Allegheny (511, 1-7), 49-42, in overtime. Burrell trailed, 27-19, heading into the fourth quarter.

Springdale senior Mike Zolnierczu­k scored 22 and sophomore Ben Myford went for a career-high 19 as the Dynamos (9-4, 5-4) went on the road and pulled out a 6556 win against second-place Sto-Rox (8-7, 6-3). Only three games separate the top six teams in Class 2A Section 1.

Freshman C.J. Singleton didn’t break into double figures, but he did hit the shot of the game on a 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining in regulation to give Class 1A Section 3-leading St. Joseph (12-5, 6-2) a 60-59 win against Propel Andrew Street (8-7, 3-5).

Tuesday’s star

Junior Jake Blumer scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead three Leechburg (106, 6-2) players in double figures, and the Class 1A No. 5 Blue Devils kept pace with with St. Joseph atop Section 3 with a 76-24 win against Trinity Christian.
