Hardy chooses PSU
On the eve of national signing day, Daequan Hardy picks Penn State.
Daequan Hardy, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s coplayer of the year, accepted a scholarship from Penn State Tuesday night and will sign a letter of intent Wednesday.
Hardy excelled at receiver, defensive back and returning kicks for Penn Hills, which won WPIAL and PIAA Class 5A titles. He was the co-player of the year along with Aliquippa’s M.J. Devonshire.
Winter sports
Mikaela Shiffrin won the super-G by 0.02 seconds at the skiing world championships in Are, Sweden, for her first medal in a speed event at a major championship. Fellow American Lindsey Vonn crashed early in her run, but still plans to compete in the downhill Sunday.
Pro basketball
Washington Wizards point guard John Wall will miss most — if not all — of next season, too, because he needs surgery on his left Achilles tendon, which he tore in a fall at home. … Minnesota Lynx star Maya Moore will skip the upcoming WNBA season, seeking more time to devote to her family and her faith.
Baseball
Curtis Granderson, 37, agreed to a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins and will report to major league spring training. If added to the 40-man roster, he would get a oneyear contract that pays $1.75 million. … Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and Tampa Bay outfielder Tommy Pham won their salary arbitration cases, with Correa receiving $5 million and Pham getting $4.1 million.
College football
Buffalo football coach Lance Leipold agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2023 after a season in which the Bulls won a school-record 10 games and made their third bowl appearance.
