Montour pulls off huge upset

Jalen Nelson had a night to remember and helped to deal Chartiers Valley a blow it may not soon forget.

Nelson, the Montour senior, chipped in 13 points, including the 1,000th of his career, while James Eubanks led the way with 23 as the Spartans (14-7, 10-3) moved into a second-place tie in Section 2 with a 59-54 upset win against Class 5A No. 5 Chartiers Valley (15-4, 10-3). The Colts had won seven games in a row and were coming off a 69-66 win over No. 2 and previously undefeated Moon (19-1, 11-1) in their previous outing.

Other top boys games

Lehigh recruit Reed Fenton left the game against Kiski Area in the first quarter after suffering an undisclose­d injury, but Bryce Butler picked up the slack with 25 points as the Class 6A No. 4-ranked Latrobe Wildcats (17-2, 9-0) pulled out a 74-62 non-section win against the Cavaliers (4-15). Fenton had seven points before leaving.

Butler junior Ethan Morton hit 13 of 18 shots (72.2 percent) from the floor and was 16 of 18 from the line for 44 points as the Class 6A No. 5 Golden Tornado (15-4, 8-2) capped their Section 1 schedule with an 86-81 victory against Seneca Valley (910, 4-6).

Serra Catholic senior guard Khalil Smith finished with 26 points to give him exactly 1,000 in his career, while Jimmy Moon scored 17 points and pulled down 18 rebounds as the Class 2A No. 2 Eagles (16-3, 11-0) rolled over Brentwood, (10-9, 6-6), 72-32, in a Section 2 match of playoff-bound squads.

Deer Lakes ended a 27year title drought as Brad Perrotte scored 17 points to lead four Lancers in double-figures and help them to a 71-64 win against Valley (6-10, 6-4) that clinched the outright Class 3A Section 3 crown. It is the first section championsh­ip for Deer Lakes (14-5, 10-1) since 1992.

Top girls game

Sierra DeAngelo led the way with 21 points to lead Class 5A No. 2 Oakland Catholic (18-2, 12-1) to a 48-43 victory against No. 5 Penn Hills (13-6) that gave the Eagles the outright Section 3 title.

Tuesday’s star

Jeannette’s Dymond Crawford made the most of her final home game as the Jayhawks senior scored 20 of her 32 points in the second half and eclipsed the 1,000point plateau as she led the team (4-16) to a 50-45 win over Steel Valley (2-17).
