Group sets positive example during shutdown

-

During the recent government shutdown, as our lawmakers on either side of the aisle failed to come together, two other unlikely groups found camaraderie. Muslims across the United States came together to assist Transportation Security Administration workers at the airport.

In the past, the U.S. Muslims have felt subjected to unnecessary scrutiny by TSA staff, to the extent that minor boys and their families have been detained at airports because of names like Mohamed and Abdullah. However, during the shutdown, CelebrateMercy, a national Muslim organization, called upon U.S. Muslims to unite in kindness and do their best to help out their local federal employees who continue to protect and serve us without paycheck.

In the Pittsburgh area, the Muslim Association of Greater Pittsburgh (MAP) delivered hot sandwiches, gift cards and grocery items to the TSA staff at Pittsburgh International Airport. Both CelebrateMercy and MAP continue their campaign to serve TSA employees, and see them through back pay and another impending shutdown. I hope this sets an example for many other community groups to work with each other through troubled times. SALMA SITWAT
