1809 Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was born in a log cabin in Hardin, now LaRue, County, Ky.

1909 The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded.

1946 Trolley service was suspended and the Pittsburgh area was blacked out by a one-day strike of 3,400 Duquesne Light employees demanding a 20 percent costof-living pay increase.

1983 The eastern part of the country was buried by 3 feet of snow.

1999 The Senate voted to acquit President Bill Clinton of perjury and obstruction of justice.
