1809 Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was born in a log cabin in Hardin, now LaRue, County, Ky.

1909 The National Associatio­n for the Advancemen­t of Colored People was founded.

1946 Trolley service was suspended and the Pittsburgh area was blacked out by a one-day strike of 3,400 Duquesne Light employees demanding a 20 percent costof-living pay increase.

1983 The eastern part of the country was buried by 3 feet of snow.

1999 The Senate voted to acquit President Bill Clinton of perjury and obstructio­n of justice.
