BRIDGEVILLE
Mayor Betty Copeland on Monday honored 92-year-old resident George Barbour, who made major contributions to the civil rights movement and carved out an exceptional journalism career in newspapers and broadcasting.
Mr. Barbour was the first African-American broadcast journalist hired by KDKA radio in 1964.
Before working at KDKA, he was a longtime reporter and city editor at the Pittsburgh Courier, where articles he wrote on discrimination in the city of Pittsburgh government and in the public schools led to major reforms, including the establishment of new guidelines for city hiring practices, she said.
Ms. Copeland made her comments in recognition of Black History Month.
McKEESPORT
Starting next year, the city will collect garbage in-house, an initiative that Mayor Michael Cherepko said will save money in the long term.
Council on Feb. 6 approved the lease of six vehicles, which will be financed over a five-year term through 911leasing.com at a cost not to exceed $300,000 per year.
Mr. Cherepko said the city will be able to purchase the vehicles for a $1 buyout.
Currently, the city contracts with Big’s Sanitation for its garbage collection at a cost of about $1.4 million per year.
Mr. Cherepko said he thinks the city can cut that cost.
“I think we can save a few hundred thousand a year,” at a minimum, he said.
