The City of McKeesport has a new police chief.

Acting on Mayor Michael Cherepko’s recommendation, council unanimously appointed Adam Alfer as chief on Feb. 6. His salary will be $80,000 per year.

He succeeds Bryan J. Washowich, who retired at the end of January after eight years as chief of police in McKeesport and 25 with the department.

Chief Alfer, 42, is a McKeesport native and has been a member of the department for 23 years. He started with the department as a cadet when he was 19, and rose through he ranks over the years and spent the past two years as assistant chief.

Allegheny County District Court Judge Eugene Riazzi swore in the city’s new police chief. Chief Alfer then thanked council and the mayor for their support.

“I won’t let you guys down,” he said.

After the meeting, Chief Alfer said it was “very humbling” to have the support of council and the community. “I was born and raised here, and don’t plan on going anywhere,” he said.

As for what he hopes to bring to the position, Chief Alfer said he wants to “continue to build stronger relationships with the community.”

“I think our police department is second to none,” Mr. Cherepko said. He added Chief Alfer exceeded his expectations in the role of assistant chief.

“I know you’re going to make us all proud and serve the City of McKeesport with the utmost integrity,” Mr. Cherepko said.
